Kornati Cup Regatta

Twenty two years ago, a few enthusiasts initiated the well-known sailing regatta "Murter -Kornati Cup". The intention was to prolong tourist season and attract attention to possibilities of nautical tourism that was at its beginnings. Vicinity of the inspiring Kornati archipelago was additional challenge to initiate quest on the unexploited potentials in this type of tourism.
The initiators of the first regatta, registered as an «unofficial» one, who bravely started with three boats, didn’t expect that they had opened a new page in nautical tourism - a new page that hasn't faded in the past two decades. The following regatta Murter – Kornati Cup had a character of a Murter traditional boat leut with 27 competitors.
The number of sailing boats was increasing every year, reaching its maximum in 1990 with 130 boats and more than 700 active participants. The last classic Murter – Kornati Cup was held in 1991 with significantly but unsurprisingly decreased number of boats considering the bad circumstances in this area. Another regatta during the war was held in the following year, having humanitarian character as its organisers like to point out. In order to attract participants, everything except food was for free. A 350 active participants sailed on 75 boats on this regatta. The participants were met on the highway 350 km away from Murter with the sign "Murter – Kornati Cup", and leaving their vehicles in Crikvenica, they were taken to the destination by Kvarner express boat «Iris» thanks to the sponsorship of Ina Company. Throughout the following three years, the regatta was held on the island of Cres as a Cres Cup with subtitle Murter-Kornati Cup, as the same people who worked on the first «unofficial» regatta carried out its realisation. Thus, we can say that regatta Murter-Kornati Cup exists for ten years in continuity.
Kornati Cup is a successor of the old regatta that started in 2000 with, having a new concept and partners, and the old desire for revival (and continuing) of the tradition. It includes Yacht Club from Biograd as a co-organiser and Biograd as one of regatta's finishes. The former regatta had three longer laps, whilst this one is sailed in five shorter laps. New stages were introduced due to the need for passage through Proversa in order to sail through the whole Kornati archipelago around islands Žut and Sit. Unlike the old Cup's open sailing character, the new Kornati Cup uses a yardstick evaluation. Spinnaker class was introduced in 2004, contributing to this regatta's sport’s spirit. Another introduction came already next year – sailing under spinnaker in accordance with ORC regulations.
Naturally, this regatta is for those interested in sport adventure. For others, who prefer enjoying sailing, there are still three days of sailing in five stages: a so called «triangle» sailing in Murter Sea - Biograd – Proversa – Piškera – Murter and unforgettable fiestas with good domestic meals and wine. One can also experience the «unforgettable sirocco». Back in 2004 and 1986 all participants remained captured on one island like Robinson because of this wind. Although it is hard to imagine nowadays with all the intense communication systems and modern transportation means, it is still possible in Kornati archipelago. This too makes this regatta unique and one of the most demanding ones existing. Its main organisers are Jarušica Ltd. Murter, Yacht club Kornati Murter, Tourist Association of Murter Municipality, National Park Kornati and Pitter Yachting. Co-organizers are marina Hramina, marina Kornati Biograd and ACI Opatija - marina Piškera. Kornati Cup is held under sponsorship of Murter Municipality every year at the end of April and beginning of May. You can register for the contest through our contact forms.
